Pictou County Atlas

Terrain Features: Islet

Islets are similar to Islands in that both are landforms surrounded by water, but the key difference lies in their size and significance. An islet is simply a very small island, often uninhabited and sometimes little more than a rocky outcrop or sandbar.

Nautical charts islets are crucial because even a small rock above water can be a hazard to navigation, and can sometimes be labeled with names like “Rock,” “Shoal,” or “Islet.

Note: Not all Terrain Features have official place names. Even there are many Islets located throughout Pictou County, very few have names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.
