Pictou County Atlas

Hydrographic Features: River

East River St. MarysA river is a large watercourse that flows continuously from one water source toward a larger body of water, and makes up a key part of the hydrological cycle, shaping landscapes, ecosystems, and human settlement. They transport water, sediments, and nutrients, and they create features such as valleys, floodplains, meanders, and deltas. They act as corridors for biodiversity, transportation, and human settlement.

In Pictou County, rivers such as the East River, West River, and Middle Rivers helped shape the county’s hydrography, settlement history, and economy.

Note: Not all Hydrographic Features have official place names, nor have all names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.
