Pictou County Atlas

Terrain Features: Reef

A reef is a submerged or partially exposed ridge found in shallow waters, often formed by resistant rock, or sandbars. In Atlantic Canada, they are typically hazardous to navigation because they lie just below or at the waterline. They influence currents, wave action, and sediment deposition, and they often provide habitats for marine life.

Macdonald ReefReefs are prominent along the Northumberland Strait, such as Caribou Reef, located off Caribou Island, or East End Reef, a rocky outcrop at the easternmost point of Pictou Island. These reefs have long been recognized as navigational hazards, which is why lighthouses and beacons, such as the one at Gull Point were established to warn mariners.

Note: Not all Terrain Features have official place names. Even there are many Reefs located throughout Pictou County, very few have names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.

Some official place names in the Pictou County Atlas related to Reefs include:

Roy Ledge

Roy Ledge

in Rocks, Reef, Terrain Feature

Roy Ledge is a shallow, rocky rise found just beneath the surface of the Northumberland Strait, north of Roy Island. Though often unnoticed by casual visitors, Roy Ledge plays a quiet but important role in the way waves, currents, and sand move along this popular stretch of coast. At low tide or during calm conditions, the outline of Roy Ledge becomes more apparent as swells break differently over the submerged rocks. Roy Ledge also contributes to the natural dynamics that make Melmerby Beach such a distinctive place.
