Hydrographic Features: Pools

Pools are deep, slow-moving sections of rivers or streams that serve as important hydrographic features, ecological habitats, and cultural landmarks. Typically are small scale but significant features that shape river valleys and ecosystems.

They often form on the outside bends of meandering rivers, below riffles, or at the base of waterfalls (plunge pools). Pools act as sediment traps and provide oxygen-rich habitats for fish and aquatic life. They are integral to the riffle–pool sequence that characterizes many streams, balancing fast, shallow sections with deep, calm reaches.

Note: Not all Hydrographic Features have official place names, nor have all names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.
