Pictou County Atlas

Hydrographic Features: Entrance

An entrance is the navigable gateway to a harbour that connects the sheltered waters of the harbour to the open sea or strait. They must balance width and depth; be wide enough for navigation, but narrow enough to reduce wave energy entering the harbour.

Often are marked by buoys, ranges, and channels to ensure safe passage. Entrances are critical hydrographic features, guiding vessels safely from the Northumberland Strait into various protected waters across the coastlines of Pictou County.

Note: Not all Hydrographic Features have official place names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some Entrances with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.
