Hydrographic Features: Channel

A channel is a narrow waterway that connects larger bodies of water or marks the deepest navigable part of a river, strait, or bay. a Channel can be the deepest part of a river or strait, where water flows most freely, can be a narrow passage between landmasses, connecting larger water bodies., or a tidal or coastal passage through reefs, shoals, or sandbars.

Main Channel - Munroes Island, Pictou CountyChannels help provide safe navigation routes for boats, as well as  influencing tidal areas, sediment transport, and coastal ecology. They are essential to coastal hydrography, and help connect larger waters, shape terrain, and sustain navigation and community life.

In Pictou County, channels such as the French Channel, Inside Channel, and Main Channel are vital hydrographic features that shape local navigation, settlement, and coastal terrain.

Note: Not all Hydrographic Features have official place names. Even there are many channels located throughout Pictou County, not all have names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.
