Conservation Area is any area designated through legislation and planning processes for the protection of natural resources, biodiversity, or ecosystems.
They are part of a broader protected areas network that the Province of Nova Scotia maintains to conserve wildlife, habitats, and ecosystem services such as clean water and carbon storage. These areas range from small nature reserves protecting rare plants to larger wilderness zones that maintain intact forest and wetland systems.
Nova Scotia has an ongoing commitment to expand and formalize its network of protected areas; a provincial plan identified many candidate sites that still require legal designation and management agreements. The Sunnybrae Game Sanctuary is a large protected wildlife area in Pictou County, established in 1930. It helps protect woodlands, lakes, and wetlands near the community of Sunny Brae, offering important habitat for wildlife.
Lighthouse Beach Nature Reserve is a provincially recognized protected area located at the head of Pictou Harbour, in the community of Pictou Landing. The reserve protects a small but ecologically important section of coastal shoreline, beach habitat, and vegetation, forming part of the broader natural system that surrounds the inner harbour.

Barneys River Nature Reserve is a protected old‑growth hardwood area covering about 567 hectares (1,401 acres); it protects intact forest, important freshwater habitat for brook trout and Atlantic salmon, and provides refuge for mainland moose while offering informal trails off Highway 104 for walking and cross‑country skiing. It helps to protect mature sugar maple, yellow birch, and other hardwood species that are increasingly rare in the region; these stands support complex forest structure and high biodiversity.
Dalhousie Mountain Nature Reserve, located in the community of Mount Thom, was designated as a Conservation Area by the Province of Nova Scotia in 2015. It is a 46‑hectare protected area that preserves rich mixed‑wood forest and several rare plant species, including round‑leaved hepatica, a woodland herb found in only a handful of Nova Scotia locations.
