Pictou County Atlas

Terrain Features: Conservation Area

Pictou County Conservation AreaConservation Area is any area designated through legislation and planning processes for the protection of natural resources, biodiversity, or ecosystems.

They are  part of a broader protected areas network that the Province of Nova Scotia maintains to conserve wildlife, habitats, and ecosystem services such as clean water and carbon storage. These areas range from small nature reserves protecting rare plants to larger wilderness zones that maintain intact forest and wetland systems.

Nova Scotia has an ongoing commitment to expand and formalize its network of protected areas; a provincial plan identified many candidate sites that still require legal designation and management agreements. Nova Scotia’s conservation areas help protect the province’s natural heritage while offering opportunities for people to connect with nature.
