Pictou County Community Maps
While many maps featuring Pictou County exist, often very little of them focus on the community level. Therefore, we started publishing a growing collection of maps featuring communities located in Pictou County.
These maps combine topographic layers, hydrography, elevation detail, and community information into clear, community-focused cartography designed to help people visualize local geography and assets quickly and confidently. Most are provided as both curated digital maps and downloadable images and are great for practical planning, education, and general use. When combined with other historic maps, topographic data, and other modern cartographic information from the digital atlas, one can start to better appreciate settlement patterns, historic features, transportation routes, and natural assets for towns and rural communities across Pictou County.
Community Boundaries
Community boundaries depicted on maps are based on the Nova Scotia Civic Address File (NSCAF) information and refined through consultation with municipalities, Emergency Health Services, fire departments, and police services.
Most people are familiar with where a community starts and stops in a linear fashion (such as along a roadway), but many do not really know where their community boundaries are (spatially) The boundaries typically have rectilinear or jagged edges because they reflect the underlying cadastral parcel fabric used to determine which community a property belongs to. And when shown together on a map, can look much like a patch quilt fabric.
Underlying geospatial base data originates from the Nova Scotia Topographic Database, interpolated from aerial photography and Lidar data, freely available under open government licenses. Maps are intended for general information only and are not a substitute for certified cadastral surveys, legal descriptions, or official municipal records. Any reliance on the maps is at the user’s own risk.
