Pictou County Administrative Areas

The Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) is Canada’s national bank of official geographical names, containing nearly 350,000 currently approved names. It is maintained by Natural Resources Canada  and coordinated by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

Administrative Areas, recognized in the CGNDB are spatial entities considered to be legal or formally designated land divisions established by federal, provincial, or territorial legislation. These areas serve a variety of purposes, including governance, conservation, recreation, and protection. The scope of Administrative Areas can be broad, encompassing both large-scale divisions and more specialized or localized designations.

The Administrative Areas are then broken up into a range of subcategories, each with specific definitions and purposes. The following table summarizes the principal subcategories, their definitions, and representative examples.

  • Conservation Area: Area designated for the protection of natural resources and biodiversity
  • Game Sanctuary: Area designated for the protection of game species, with restrictions on hunting and access
  • Indian Reserve: Land set aside under the Indian Act for the use and benefit of a First Nation band.
  • Nature Reserve: Area designated to protect representative or special ecosystems, flora, or fauna
  • Municipality: An Area with an incorporated local government
  • Protected Beach: A beach area designated for protection, often to preserve natural features or prevent erosion.
  • Provincial Park: Crown land set aside for conservation and recreation, managed by provincial authorities
  • Wildlife Management Area : / Wilderness Area: Area managed for the conservation and enhancement of wildlife and habitats
