Ta’n Weji-sqalia’tiek: Mi’kmaw Place Names Digital Atlas and Web Site was created to raise awareness of the deep connection the Mi’kmaq have to the landscape of Eastern Canada they call Mi’kma’ki, the place of the Mi’kmaq. It documents approximately 13,000 year relationship between the Mi’kmaq and the lands and waters of Mi’kma’ki.
The research team has recorded approximately 1,500 place names collected through the interviews, an extensive list compiled, as well as historical documents and dictionaries, from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Through an interactive map, historical photos, cultural insights, and linguistic knowledge, the site highlights how Mi’kmaw place names preserve stories of origin, movement, ecology, and identity. Rooted in the concept of weji‑sqalia’timk “we sprouted from the earth” this project shows how the Mi’kmaq and the landscape are inseparable, offering visitors a meaningful way to understand Eastern Canada through Mi’kmaw language, memory, and worldview.
