About Merigomish Harbour
Merigomish Harbour is a charming coastal destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural experiences.
Starting between Big Merigomish Island and Kings Head, the harbour extends several kilometres inland, branching into a maze of coves, tidal channels, and small islands such as the Pig Islands and French Channel.
It is located within several Pictou County communities including Big Island, Merigomish, Lower Barneys River, Kings Head, Egerton, Sutherlands River, and Woodburn and feeds into the Northumberland Strait. The harbour itself extends about eight kilometers to the east and nearly six kilometers to the southwest, featuring numerous islands within it.
Historically, its sheltered waters made it an important anchorage for fishing and coastal trade, and in 1882 the federal government built the Merigomish Lighthouse at Kings Head to guide vessels safely into the harbour.
It is labeled as being Port Luttrell on the 1777 Northumberland Strait map, and is also referenced in the Nova Scotia place names book as having this name at one time.,
Merigomish Harbour is also home to a Mi’kmaq reserve known as Merigomish Harbour 31, which is part of the Pictou Landing First Nation.
The harbour is valued for its natural beauty, warm summer waters, and recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, and birdwatching, while its complex geography continues to reflect the layered cultural and ecological history of Pictou County.
