Marshdale is a rural area is located along Fox Brook west of Hopewell on the west branch of the East River. The name is largely descriptive, and the area originally had a different name, the area was known as “Fox Brook,” around 1784 when moose hunters shot a fox here.
Farquhar Falconer who settled here about 1793 was one of the first settlers. Donald McKay settled here by 1806.
Farms and Farmers of Pictou County is a collection of articles written by by R. H. Ward between 1919 and 1922 that showcases some of the many farms and farmers in Marshdale during 1914-1922.
In 1949 thirty seven Estonian war refugees from camps in Germany arrived to settle at Marshdale in portable cottages. By October, the first workshops for their handicrafts were being erected.
The Marshdale Post Office opened in 1885, it was closed in 1913 and replaced with rural mail delivery service.
A school was established at Fox Brook about 1820, and a new school-house was opened in 1883. The Marshdale school burned down in 1935.
Population of Fox Brook in 1956 was 114.
