About MacKenzie Beach Provincial Park

In 2024 The Province of Nova Scotia announced they were designating 15 new provincial parks and expanding two others as a part of the provincial parks and protected areas plan. One of those newly designated parks is located on Caribou Island, known by local residents as Caribou Island Outer Beach, MacKenzie Beach, or the Dragline (unofficial names).

MacKenzie Beach Provincial Park is located along the north side of Caribou Island, between Black Point and Hawksbill Point (just off the Caribou Island Road). The beach portion is currently accessible by walking along a small path that leads over a small sand dune, with limited parking (this may change if the Province decides to invest some money into the location). It is a beautiful natural beach so depending on the time of year and weather, you may find it sandy and clear, or contains lots of seaweed and driftwood.

Caribou Island Outer Beach, is a stunning coastal destination offering a tranquil and picturesque beach experience. This expansive beach stretches along the shoreline, providing ample space for beachgoers to enjoy and explore. The sandy shoreline boasts a light golden color, adding to the natural beauty of the area

The beach has potential for development but is since it is so close to Waterside Beach Provincial Park, there is a good chance that it will mainly become a Park Reserve to help preserve the natural habitat. One of the main reasons that it has become a Park is because of its potential for piping plover (local sea bird species); and has a large bog wetland associated with pond, marshy area, and dune system.

The size of MacKenzie Beach Provincial Park is 42.07 hectares.
