About MacKay Brook Nature Reserve
MacKay Brook Nature Reserve, located in the community of Elmfield. It is a provincially designated protected area preserving one of the few remaining remnant blocks of old hemlock, spruce and mixed hardwood forest within the heavily fragmented Northumberland Strait Plain, an area historically shaped by forestry, agriculture, and rural settlement.
The reserve, named after a local fresh watercourse (MacKay Brook), was established in 2014 as part of Nova Scotia’s broader effort to protect representative forest ecosystems and secure remaining old‑growth pockets in regions where industrial land use has fragmented natural habitats.
It helps contribute to regional biodiversity by safeguarding mature forest habitat and connecting with nearby conservation lands managed by the Friends of Redtail Society
