Lovat is a rural community located south east of Salt Springs between the Middle and West Rivers. It was named after Lord Lovat, who was Chief of the Fraser Clan, in Inverness, Scotland.
Donald Cameron and John McKenzie settled here in 1810. Grants of land were made to Roderick McKenzie in 1813, to John McKay in 1814, to James Fraser in 1815 and to Hector McKenzie in 1815.
In 1879 it was decided to open a Post Office, prior to that date people in the district got their mail from Limerock post office.

Population in 1956 was 56.
