Lorne is a rural community located in the East River Valley about half way between Middle River and West Branch, East River. Lorne is a gender-neutral name of Scottish origin. It derives from the Scottish place name Lorne, which is believed to mean “fox.”

An early name for the area was Big Brook, but this was changed by the locals in 1878, in honor of the Governor General, the Marquis of Lorne, who was married to Princess Louise (Queen Victoria’s daughter).
