About Lismore
Lismore is a rural coastal community located between the Ponds and Knoydart along NS Highway 245 (Sunrise Trail). The Gaelic name for the community is Lios Mòr, meaning the ‘Great Garden’ and was named after its similarity to Lismore, Scotland.
The area was once referred to as Lower Bailey’s Brook named after John John Baillie, a disbanded soldier from the 82nd Regiment, who settled al the mouth of the Bailey’s Brook (which empties into Lismore Harbour). in 1788 Lismore was a settlement of Highland Catholics from Scotland, starting with John Baillie, Duncan Chisholm, Alexander Chisholm and John Gault, all whom received land grants in 1792.
A Roman Catholic Church was built in 1834. This church is still operational in the community and one of the oldest free standing wooden churches in Nova Scotia. “The square nails used in building the Lismore church were made by a woman blacksmith, Mrs. Moses Priest. Who came from England to New Glasgow, and finally settled at Lismore.”
A school-house was built here by 1875. A new school replaced the original one in 1883 but this building burned down during the winter of 1949. A new two room school was completed in 1953, and was eventually converted into the Lismore community center (witch has expanded in size since then).
Population in 1956 was 112.
Lismore Beach is considered a hidden gem by many, and a popular summer hangout for residents of the area
