About Juniper Swamp
Juniper Swamp is located in the Gully Lake Wilderness Area (just inside the western county boundary line), and is supplied with fresh water flowing from Juniper Brook.
As a terrain feature, Juniper Swamp illustrates the interaction of hydrology and vegetation in shaping Nova Scotia’s landscapes. Unlike meadows or barrens, which are defined by open grasslands or sparse vegetation, swamps are forested wetlands with rich biodiversity. Juniper Swamp’s presence within the Gully Lake Wilderness Area highlights the importance of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance, supporting wildlife, and preserving the natural heritage of Pictou County.
This area is valued for its ecological richness, recreational opportunities, and conservation significance, offering visitors a chance to experience some of the province’s best-preserved wilderness. It is also is protected to preserve its ecological integrity and to provide opportunities for low-impact recreation.
Although there are many swampy terrains located throughout Pictou County, there is only one that is officially included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database.
