The Island East River is a rural area in Pictou County located along the east River, west of Springville and east of Hopewell. The name was derived from the fact that it was the eastern shore of an inland island formed by the two branches of the east River, a lake and brooks.
Settlement began around 1789 by Alexander McLean and John Cameron.
A school was built in 1873. The first teacher was Roderick Fraser.
The railway was built through here in 1890 by the New Glasgow Coal, Iron and Railway Company.
Population in 1956 was 78.
