About Indian Lake
Indian Lake is a quiet forest‑lined rural Woodland Area characterized by forests and natural vegetation located south of Marshy Hope. The region is lightly settled with scattered homes, camps, and properties, road‑accessible, and shaped by the long history of forestry, homesteading, and inland travel routes that define much of central Pictou County.
Twinning of the Trans Canada Highway in 2024 diverted part of the the original highway configuration to avoid the Marshy Hope area and now passes through part of Indian Lake.
Barneys River Nature Reserve located within the Indian Lake Woodland Area is a ecologically rich inland landscape of old‑growth hardwood forest, freshwater, and habitat critical to species such as the endangered mainland moose. The reserve protects 567 hectares of forest and waterways in the Barneys River watershed, spread across three separate areas (of which 1 is located in this area).
The name also refers to a fresh water lake located within this area.
