Haliburton is a rural community is located along Halliburton Brook west of the Town Pictou. It was named in honor of Sir Brenton Halliburton, Chief Justice of Nova Scotia, 1833-1860.
An early name for the area was the “Town Gut” since the town plot laid out by the Philadelphia Grant settlers who arrived in 1767 was located at the mouth of the creek opposite Browns Point.
Stephen Herrington was engaged in completing a saw mill at “New Philadelphia” in 1784.
The Town Gut bridge was built in 1800 and destroyed by a storm in 1873. It was rebuilt by 1879.
Population in 1956 was 93.
