About Granton
The community of Granton is situated along the east side of the Middle River between Mount William and Sylvester. It was named after a seaport in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The site was granted to Archibald Allerdice in 1784 and Mrs. Eliza McLean in 1814.

Granton is the birthplace of Leonard W. Murray, a highly decorated and influential Canadian naval officer in the Royal Canadian Navy who played a central role in the Battle of the Atlantic, and was the only Canadian to command an Allied theatre of operations during World War II. His strategic leadership and organizational abilities were instrumental in the Allied victory in the Battle of the Atlantic, cementing his significance as one of Canada’s most renowned naval officers.
Memorials dedicated to the memory of Rear Admiral Murray and the Battle of the Atlantic have been created in Pictou and also in Pictou Landing.
Michelin began manufacturing operations in granton in 1971, with the establishment of a tire production facility, the site was Michelin’s second-largest rubber-mixing operation, producing passenger-car and light-truck tires.
The Pictou SPCA manages an animal shelter in Granton.
Population of Granton in 1956 was 102.
