A gradual depopulation occurred as remote settlements shrank and land use patterns changed, reducing the need for agricultural labor. Emigration from the region began as early as 1773 with the voyage of the “Hector” and was driven by a complex mix of factors.

The study also connects this history to the establishment of several Gairloch related settlements located in the Canadian Maritimes, with one of them located in Pictou County. Early settlers from Wester Ross established their communities along the West, Middle, and East River valleys. They cleared the land by selling timber not needed for building, which in turn allowed them to cultivate the land as required by their grants. The pioneers of New Gairloch were able to pay for their own passage and had some capital to establish themselves, with no evidence of financial assistance from the Gairloch Estate in Scotland.
