French River is a rural community located west of Broadway. Prior to 1763 there was a French settlement at the mouth of the river in this area and that is why both the river and the community were named so. Most of the area was part of the 1765 Wentworth grant but part was granted to John, Alexander, James, George, William and Angus McDonald in 1818.
