About Eureka
Eureka means “I have found it,” a cry of discovery, and this rural community was named after the Eureka Milling Company that was established there in 1882. Now mainly a rural community located west of the forks of the East River just north of Hopewell, it was once a busy industrial area (with an interesting history).
Settlement began in the general area by 1789 by Farquhar and Alexander Falconer and Alexander Fraser. John Cameron was settled about half-way between the present village of Eureka and the Island.
The area itself however was a wilderness until 1882 when the Eureka Milling Company factory was erected. The location was selected along the West Branch of the East River to allow the water to provide power and pleasantly situated in a hollow, sheltered from the stormy blasts of winter and delightfully cool in the hottest days of summer. The settlement was steadily growing in 1890.
Farms and Farmers of Pictou County is a collection of articles written by by R. H. Ward between 1919 and 1922 that showcases some of the many farms and farmers in Eureka during 1914-1922.
The corner-stone of a Methodist church was built in 1893. A school was built in 1894. The monthly, Pictou County Visitor, a publication by the Zion Church and edited by Reverend J. E. Forbes began about 1925.
Eureka Woolen Mills organized at Hopewell in 1881 went into liquidation soon after 1890 and was bought by H. M. Fitzpatrick who began manufacturing woolen blankets. When he died a new company began making tweeds and dress goods. Another group took over the mills in 1905 which became Nova Scotia Underwear Company in 1910. The mill burned down in 1915 and the Company moved to Windsor.
Eureka Power Company was formed about 1919. The Intercolonial Railway was built through the area about 1866.
The Eureka Fire Department was organized in 1949. No fire department of any sort had existed in the village following the fire and subsequent removal of the Eureka Woolen Mills in 1915.
In 1955 the last local train service that been servicing the area since 1904 ended.

The Eureka Mills Bridge, originally built in 1887 was recently replaced in 2023 by a $3.5 million 38-metre, two-lane concrete structure with a sidewalk.
