Elgin is a small rural community located west of Centredale near the headwaters of West Branch East River. Formerly called Waterville, the name was changed between 1878 and 1880 to honor James Bruce, the 8th Earl of Elgin. He was the Governor General of British North America (Canada) rom 1847 to 1854.
“If one wants to see just how beautiful nature can be when other conditions are favorable they should take a drive on either side of the East River out of Hopewell along the road to Lorne and Elgin. One would need to travel far in order to see better looking crops, either in hay, or grain, than those on the wide stretch of rich intervale along the banks of that river. ” R. H. A postal way office was opened in 1863 along the east side of West Branch River.
Population in 1956 was 69.
