Egerton is a rural community located between Sutherlands River and Merigomish along NS Route 245 (Sunrise Trail). It may have been named after Francis Egerton, third Duke of Bridgewater, known as the Father of British Inland Navigation.
Sometime during the early 19th century, a Captain T. Egerton obtained a reservation of five hundred acres near the Egerton-Maxwellton township line. The land was granted in 1765 but settlement probably began in the 1780’s or 1790’s.
St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church was built in 1865.
Population in 1956 was 103.
Egerton was also the name of one of the three townships that when Pictou County was subdivided into in 1806. (the other two being Pictou and Maxwelton).
