About Eastern Peak
The Eastern Peak is a submerged shoal feature within Amet Sound, positioned just off Cape John, it has long been noted on nautical charts as a hazard to navigation.
This feature, marks one of the shallowest points in the approaches to Amet Sound. Rising abruptly from the surrounding seabed, the peak is composed of rocky outcrops tied to the Cape John Formation—a Carboniferous sandstone and conglomerate unit that underlies much of the peninsula.
Mariners approaching from the east had to take particular care, as the peak lies close to the entrance channels near Eastern Passage and the Amet Island Shoals, where tidal currents and shifting sands complicate navigation.
