About East River St. Marys
East River St. Marys is a picturesque area located in the south-east corner of Pictou County on the East River St. Mary’s in north central Nova Scotia.
This region is characterized by its beautiful forested floodplain habitat. The St. Mary’s River, one of Nova Scotia’s longest at approximately 250 km, plays a crucial role in shaping the landscape and ecology of the area. The river system comprises of four main branches: West, East, North, and Main, with the East Branch flowing through Pictou County. The natural beauty of East River St. Marys is exemplified by the East River St. Marys Nature Reserve, which protects an intact forested floodplain.
Its name was based on its location. Settlement begun around 1803 by William and John McKay and Thomas Fraser. Donald, Joseph, Roderick, Hugh and James McKay, petitioned for land in 1809, and they received grants in 1811 (and probably settled about that time).
Two small churches were built in the early 19th century for the Kirk and Free Church congregations. Eventually they united and their new church was opened October 29, 1874. The new United Church was begun in June, 1956, opened July 17, 1958. One of the first teachers was Hugh Cameron in 1826.
A new school-house was built about 1891. A postal way office was established in 1855.
