About East River St. Marys Nature Reserve
East River St. Marys is a picturesque area located in Pictou County situated along the East Branch of the St. Mary’s River. The natural beauty of the area is exemplified by the East River St. Marys Nature Reserve, which protects an intact forested floodplain.
The East River St. Marys Nature Reserve received official designation made under the Special Places Protection Act in 2023. This reserve is particularly notable for supporting white elm and ironwood trees, species that are uncommon in Nova Scotia. Additionally, it provides critical habitat for wood turtles, a species at risk, underlining the area’s ecological importance.

East River St. Marys Nature protects a patch of intact forested floodplain in the midst of a highly modified, biologically productive agricultural landscape at the southern extent of Pictou County.
The nature reserve supports white elm and ironwood, both uncommon tree species in Nova Scotia. It also provides habitat for wood turtle, a listed species at risk. The nature reserve is one of the only publicly owned parcels of land on the East Branch of St. Marys River. [Province of Nova Scotia]
