About East Branch French River
The East Branch French River is a tributary of the French River that flows south through upland interiors near the around the community of Laggan, then meanders through the communities of Woodfield, Broadway, Piedmont, and Merigomish and eventual empties into Merigomish Harbour. It is a smaller hydrographic feature than the East River of Pictou, but it still plays an important role in local settlement history, hydrology, and land use.
The designation “East Branch” reflects a common cartographic practice of distinguishing tributaries by cardinal direction. This indicates that the French River system had multiple branches recognized by surveyors and settlers. As a branch stream, it contributes to the flow and ecological health of the French River. It supports riparian habitats for fish, amphibians, and bird species, while playing a role in groundwater recharge and filtering runoff from surrounding farmland and forest.
