The rural community of Durham is located west of Sylvester. It was named after the Earl of Durham (Governor-General of of British North America) in 1838., and was previously known as West River.
Settlement began here in the spring of 1775 by people from Galloway, Scotland, who first settled on Prince Edward Island before coming to Pictou County. These included, Anthony MacLellan, William Clark, David Stewart, William Smith, Joseph Richards and John MacLean on the west side of the river and Charles Blaikie on the east side.
Before 1849 it had four inns, two churches and a post office. When the timber trade declined so did t he community. A Presbyterian church was built about 1813
A postal way office was established about 1838, and in 1847 this became a post office.
Population in 1956 was 176.
