About Dalhousie Mountain
Dalhousie Mountain is located in the community of Mount Thom north of the Trans Canada Highway. It has an elevation of 341 meters, the highest elevation in Pictou County. It rises above all surrounding uplands as a prominent forested summit accessible by vehicle through gated service roads.
Part of the mountain’s eastern slope includes Dalhousie Mountain Nature Reserve, a 46‑hectare protected area that preserves rich mixed‑wood forest and several rare plant species, including round‑leaved hepatica, a woodland herb found in only a handful of Nova Scotia locations. The protected site contains stands of sugar maple and yellow birch that support abundant spring wildflowers, making it one of the county’s ecologically valuable upland pockets. The protected area is bordered by access roads and the wind farm infrastructure but remains a refuge for sensitive species.
Dalhousie Mountain is also home to one of Nova Scotia’s most significant renewable‑energy projects. The Dalhousie Mountain Wind Farm, completed in 2009 at a cost of $130 million, includes 34 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 51 MW. The turbines are spread across the summit and surrounding ridges, making the site a defining visual landmark. The wind farm generates more than 175,000 MWh of electricity annually, enough to power roughly 20,000 homes—more than all in Pictou County.
