About Caribou Rivers Nature Reserve
Caribou Rivers Nature Reserve is located the head of the Caribou River estuary, a sheltered coastal environment shaped by tidal influence and freshwater inflow. where the Big and Little Caribou Rivers meet and flow into Northumberland Strait.
The reserve, created in 2014, protects a mosaic of mixed Acadian forest of of red maple, aspen and black spruce, estuarine shoreline, and shrub bog, providing habitat for shorebirds, nesting eagles and a variety of wetland species. The reserve was created during a period of accelerated protected‑area expansion in Nova Scotia, with a focus on securing coastal and wetland ecosystems.
The combination of forest, bog, and tidal estuary makes this reserve ecologically significant despite its modest size. It is one of Pictou County’s most ecologically diverse coastal reserves.
