About Caribou-Munroes Island Provincial Park
Caribou–Munroes Island Provincial Park is one of Nova Scotia’s signature coastal parks, known for its warm waters, sandy beaches, and easy access to the Northumberland Strait.
Located in the community of Braeshore, about 11 km from Pictou and close to the PEI ferry, the park blends natural beauty, recreation, and regional heritage in a way that has made it a favourite destination for campers, swimmers, and locals alike.
The Provincial Park was officially created on February 22, 1972, part of a provincial effort to expand public coastal access and protect ecologically significant shorelines. The park’s establishment formalized public access while preserving the shoreline from development pressures.
The park has 95 campsites, including both serviced and unserviced options, with wooded, partially wooded, and open sites. A highlight of the park is the trail system leading to Munroes Island, a quieter, more natural landscape of mixed forest, rocky shoreline, and tidal flats. The island offers a sense of seclusion and is popular with hikers seeking a peaceful coastal walk. The island also contributes to the park’s ecological value, providing habitat for shorebirds, small mammals, and coastal plant communities.
