About Caribou Harbour
Caribou Harbour is part of a larger geography that includes Caribou Island, Central Caribou, and Caribou River. It is historically significant to Pictou County and an important port offering ferry services, commercial fishing, recreational opportunities, and a notable maritime climate. It serves as a key transportation hub and a popular destination for boating and coastal activities. The least depth in the channel over the bar was 6.5 meters in 1998, with depths of 9.1 to 13.7 meters extending to the causeway.
Early settlers found remains of French houses on Caribou Island and several on the mainland, indicating historical French presence.
The federal government selected it in the late 1930s as the Nova Scotia terminal for a seasonal ferry service to Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island. This service, operated by Northumberland Ferries Limited since 1941, carries passengers, vehicles, and truck traffic between May and December. Additionally, Caribou Harbour hosts a small passenger-only seasonal ferry service to Pictou Island, departing from the small craft fishing harbour adjacent to the NFL ferry terminal.
