Cape John, Pictou County
The rural coastal community of Cape John is situated between John Bay and the Northumberland Strait in north west corner of Pictou County. The area was originally referred to as “Back Shore” due to its location relative to the nearby village of River John, and the name of the cape has early references to the point of land known as “Point Jaune” dating back to the 1770s.
The Mi’kmaq referred to this region as “Wenjooteamwakade,” meaning “the cow pasture,” highlighting its historical significance and connection to indigenous culture.
A protected harbour in the community backed by a man-made breakwater helps shelter and support both small fishing vessels and recreational crafts. A lobster focused fish processing plant also underpin the local economy. Several beautiful sandy beaches can be found throughout the community.
