About Black Point
Black Point is a rocky headland located west of Hawksbill Point on the north side of Caribou Island extending out into the Northumberland Strait. It was formerly known as Barebank Point, as well as Johns Point (as shown on the Crown Grant Map, and the 1879 Pictou County Atlas), but officially changed to the current version in 1976.
On the 1879 Map, Hawksbill Point is labeled as Black Point, indicating that the names may have been switched here, or it is more likely a cartographic error, because Hawksbill Point is labeled on the 1777 Northumberland Strait Map,
Black Point is a common name and thus there a few other places in Pictou County that go by Black Point: one is the community of Black Point (in the Little Harbour area) and the other is the cape in the community of Black Point that extends eastward from the community out into the Northumberland Strait.
