About Black Brook Lake
Black Brook Lake is a fresh water lake located south of the Keppoch, near the eastern side of Pictou County in the community of Willowdale. Black Brook feeds into the lake from the north, and then water from the lake drains out through Black Brook in the south.
It is a popular spot for fishing, particularly for brook trout. The lake’s surroundings are primarily forested, and it is part of a larger network of brooks and rivers in the region.
The name “Black Brook Lake” likely comes from the dark appearance of the water, which is a common occurrence in lakes and brooks in the region. This dark coloration is caused by tannins and other organic matter from decaying vegetation in the water. The name simply combines the descriptive characteristic of the water with the type of waterway it is.
According to the fishing app fishbrain.com Black Brook Lake is a good location for catching brook trout. The presence of brook trout suggests the lake probably contains relatively cold, clean water, as brook trout typically thrive in healthy, well-oxygenated aquatic environments.
The lake is about 23.8 hectares, has a mean depth of 7.6 metres, with its deepest part being just over 18 metres (one of the deepest lakes in Pictou County). It has an average hardness as CaCO3 (mg/L) of 10, and a PH of 6.
More details about the baseline water quality of this lake can be found by examining Nova Scotia’s Lake Chemistry data collected from the Nova Scotia Lake Survey Program and provided by the Government of Nova Scotia. The water quality data include nutrients, chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, temperature, transparency, alkalinity, colour, major ions, selected metals, plus various fish habitat parameters. Freshwater lakes are typically inland bodies of water, typically formed from depressions in the earth’s surface. They are bounded by sills, and usually fed by streams, brooks, or rivers from the surrounding region. Lakes provide great places to swim, fish, canoe, and generally relax.
Pictou County is dominantly made up of rural areas and contains an abundant amount of fresh water lakes and streams found all across its geography.
