About Big Bog
Big Bog is one of the most significant ecologically rich wetlands found in Pictou County, stretching east of Dufferin Road and extending across the communities of Sundridge, Heathbell, Meadowville, and Scotch Hill.
This defining terrain feature in the county’s interior landscape, id both ecologically and geographically important for its hydrology, and biodiversity, and continues to play a vital role in the landscape. It lies within a glacially shaped lowland basin, where poor drainage and centuries of peat accumulation have created a vast wetland complex. Its size and continuity make it one of the largest bogs in the region. The communities situated around its margins, reflect how rural settlement historically avoided the wettest ground but relied on the surrounding terrain for farming and forestry.
