About Barneys River
Barneys River was named after Barnabas McGee, one of the early settlers who landed here in the late 1770s. The mouth of the River was a major Mi’kmaq camping ground, known as Kaqpese’kaqnk (“At the smelt fishing place”).
It is a fresh water river that flows south through upland interiors of the communities of Avondale, Kenzieville, Marshy Hope, Piedmont and Lower Barneys River and then empties into Merigomish Harbour.
West Barneys River is a major branch of the river. Smaller tributaries such as Beaver Brook, Middle Brook, and Baxter Brook contribute to the watershed, supporting biodiversity and seasonal water regulation.
H. H. Bruce’s History of Barneys River Early Days in East Pictou (1886) provides vivid accounts of pioneer life, describing hardships, oral traditions, and genealogical sketches of families such as the Stewarts, Gordons, McLeans, McKays, and Sutherlands.
