About Barneys River Station
Barneys River Station is a small rural community located just north of the Trans Canada Highway south of the community of Avondale. It was once a prominent railway stop, thus the name.
The area saw significant interactions with Indigenous peoples, which helped shape the dynamics of the region during its formative years. Key figures such as Barnabas McGee (who was the first settler in Merigomish township about 1776) and Walter Murray emerged as leaders, contributing to the development of local infrastructure and industry, particularly through the establishment of mills that became vital to the economy.
