About Amet Island Shoals
The Amet Island Shoals are a cluster of shallow, rocky and sandy formations lying just inside the entrance of Amet Sound, off Cape John in Pictou County, and have long been recognized as a defining navigational feature of the area.
These shoals extend around Amet Island, which sits at the mouth of the sound where it opens into the Northumberland Strait. On nautical charts dating back to the mid‑19th century, including the 1841 chart of Amet Sound, where the shoals are carefully delineated with depth soundings and bottom types (sand, mud, rock) to guide mariners through the narrow approaches. Their shallow waters, often less than a few metres deep, posed hazards to larger vessels but also created natural fishing grounds, as the mix of currents and substrates supports a rich marine ecosystem.
