The community of Alma is located at the head of Middle River, north west of the Town of Westville. It was named in commemoration of the place (Alma River) where a great victory was won by the British and the French over the Russians in the Crimean War in 1854.
A post office was established in 1855, and a public hall was built in 1880. A railway between Stellarton and Pictou opened in 1887, with a railway station built here in the early 20th century.
Population of Alma in 1956 was 152.
