About Abercrombie Point
Abercrombie Point is a a narrow piece of land jutting into Pictou Harbour, it is located in the community of Abercrombie . Just to the west, the Pictou Causeway begins at Skinner Point and just to the north are wooden pilings that support a double-crested cormorant colony, and is part of the Abercrombie Wildlife Management Area.
Originally it was known as Fraser’s Point, not from an original settler, but from a Fraser family who succeeded the original grantee, Colin MacDonald. It seems to have succeeded to the name of Abercrombie Point about 1840 however the name itself and the reason for the change has not been well documented.
The 1850 Abercrombie Point Map shows the names and locations of many of these early land grants. As shown on the maps, many Frasers were granted or obtained land in this area. Note: unlike most maps, this one (shown below) was drawn with north pointing to the bottom of the page.
