“Plan showing buildings destroyed by fire at Millsville Pictou County, N.S.”
This vintage hand-drawn map of Millsville, and surrounding area created in 1921 provides a rare and intimate glimpse into the rural landscape and settlement patterns of early 20th century of West Pictou. Rendered with meticulous care, the map captures both the broader road network of the region and a detailed inset plan of Millsville itself, highlighting buildings that were destroyed in a fire.
The main part of the map outlines a network of roads and communities stretching across the county, including Loganville, Mount Thom, Salt Springs, and the West Branch areas. Landmarks like Fruit Farm and the route “To Pictou” situates the map within a lived and working landscape, where agriculture and transportation shaped daily life.
The inset of the 1921 Millsville map details an area drawn to a scale of 40 feet to the inch, and shows a cluster of buildings, Spruce Hedge, Orchard, and Banks. Notably, several structures are marked with an “X” and annotated as buildings destroyed by fire.
Together, the map’s dual focus on regional layout and local detail reflects the surveying precision and storytelling power of early land documentation. It preserves not just the geography of Millsville, but local history marked by roads traveled, orchards tended, and buildings lost.
