This 1864 topographical map of Pictou County, created by Ambrose F. Church, captures the county at a moment when settlement patterns, industry, and transportation routes were rapidly taking shape.

The image above is a detailed sketch of  the Town of Pictou in 1864 that was one of the detailed map insets included on the much larger 1864 Pictou County Topographical Township Map by Ambrose F. Church (shown below). The larger map also includes a directory containing prominent community members (clergy, blacksmiths, farmers, merchants, etc. ) from that time period for this map detail. On the full resolution copy, you can zoom into the details, read the print and see locations of buildings etc.

Ambrose F. Church was commissioned to create a series of detailed color maps, one for each of Nova Scotia’s counties. In 1864. after completing his detailed map of Halifax,  he completed the topographical township map of Pictou County. His wok provides extraordinary detail, with every road, river, village, and township carefully drawn. These maps provide a rare, historic view of who settled where, and how the county was organized.
