Historical Maps are a great resource to help learn geography and history. They can be used to help locate exactly where a persons ancestors lived, as well as the layout of neighborhoods and surrounding areas, with basic topographic features at a certain point in time.

This 1864 topographical map of Pictou County, created by Ambrose F. Church, captures the county at a moment when settlement patterns, industry, and transportation routes were rapidly taking shape.

Ambrose F. Church was commissioned to create a series of detailed color maps, one for each of Nova Scotia’s counties. In 1864. after completing his detailed map of Halifax,  he completed the topographical township map of Pictou County. His wok provides extraordinary detail, with every road, river, village, and township carefully drawn.

The map also includes several detailed inset maps (featuring Durham, Hopewell, Albion Mines now Stellarton, Pictou, and New Glasgow) as well as several small directories of prominent community members (clergy, blacksmiths, farmers, merchants, etc. ).  These maps provide a rare, historic view of who settled where, and how the county was organized.

The map illustrates administrative boundaries, communities, roads, railroads, and many other topographical features of the late 1800s. The actual map was relatively large measuring about 55 x 55 inches, and created with a scale of one mile to one inch [1 mile = 1 inch], but folded into a smaller document (crease marks are typically found in scanned copies).

As you can see highlighted in the map, Pictou County was once divided into three sub-counties, townships or regions: Pictou (western portion), Egerton (central region), and Maxwelton (eastern portion). You may also notice the importance of the railways and the role they played almost 100 years before the construction of the Trans Canada Highway.

Church’s 1864 map survives as both a historical artifact and a storytelling tool. Digitized copies allow researchers, families, and curious locals to zoom in on the fine details (sometimes spotting an ancestor’s farm, a long‑vanished schoolhouse, or an early road alignment that shaped later development). Sharing these maps helps keep that history alive, connecting present day Pictou County with the people and places that defined it. More than a just an old map, it can be considered a snapshot of Pictou county in time, captured with remarkable care and precision.
